Northern Illinois had record water and flooding in July. Water pouted into our basement through the window wells in Kevin's office/tool room/tennis stringing room. All of the piles of papers on the floor were soaked. Items high up on shelves by the windows were also soaked. He lost a lot of stuff, but it also forced a long-overdue clean out.
Tons of wet and dirty stuff had to be thrown out. Everything had to be taken out of his office and brought up to the living room. Basement carpet and soaked padding had to be ripped out. Fans and wet-vacing of water continued for days0.
To make matters worse, a baby skunk fell down our window well that night. It couldn't get out and due ot all of the rain, was half drowning in the window well. We watched as it tried to claw its way out, again and again and again... tearing the screen to pieces. It was desperate. I didn't want the thing to die in our window well. What do you do then? So, my misguided self attempted to gingerly lower boards, and other items that it could hang on to to climb out. Due to all of the water, everything was so slippery, they didn't help. I fond some netting that I hoped it could claw on to to climb out. Unfortunately, the netting slipped making it seem like he was caught in a net. SO he sprayed. And then essentially sat in spray-infused water, marinating in it and therefore permeating our house with a horrendous smell. Dealing with basement clean up is bad enough. Now we were doing it in eye-watering skunk odor.
We were a lot luckier than a lot of people. It could have been so. much. worse. In the end, a good samaritan came with a special tool, plucked the skunk out, and flung him yards away. The smell eventually cleared. The basement remains a hodge podge of padless carpet and cement floor, but that will be rectified. Some day.
